2011 Butter Sculpture Championships
The butter sculptures are a huge crowd favourite every year. Artists work with an unusual but beautiful material to create sculptures that represent our nation's agricultural landscape. Artists from the Ontario College of Art & Design, Central Technical School and Georgian College are given a 25kg block of Gay Lea Butter, and only one day to create their masterpiece. They don't disappoint!
Along with tedious planning, it takes careful precision and patience to carve and etch out the finest details. Butter sculpting is intense! For those who think otherwise, check out the movie Butter starring Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde and Hugh Jackman at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (or stand in a walk-in fridge for a several hours a day).
Our theme for the 2011 was “A Tribute to Agricultural Excellence”.

The Winners:
Congratulations to Adam Crosby of OCAD who took first place in 2011. We are always on the look out to see what bountiful designs artists will come up with and, indubitably due the Fair's endless source of inspiration, our sculpters debonaires always deliver. Artistic themes highlight the balance of local foods, featuring pigs, chickens, and some tricky engineering to make a tree!
You can do and convey almost anything with butter, excite passion, melt hearts!
Be sure not to miss our butter sculptures in 2012 in Hall C. Michelangelo never had an opportunity like this!
