Daniel Coyle Creates a Legacy with World Cup Victory at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario – Ireland’s Daniel Coyle claimed a resounding victory in the $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Toronto on Saturday night, November 12, in front of a sold-out crowd to close out the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
Canadian course designer Michel Vaillancourt set a challenging track and as rails fell around the course, it became evident riders and horses would have to be in perfect form to advance to the jump-off. Two-time Canadian Olympian Tiffany Foster thrilled the home crowd with a brilliant clear performance aboard Northern Light, an 11-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare (Plot Blue x Contender) owned by Artisan Farms LLC. Six rounds later, Coyle made it a jump-off by producing the second fault-free effort riding Legacy, a 12-year-old Zangersheide mare (Chippendale Z x Bon Ami). As the penultimate rider, Israel’s Daniel Bluman made it a three-horse race when he piloted Gemma W to the final clear first-round.
Foster was the first to return to tackle the jump-off, picking up eight faults and exceeding the time-allowed of 44-seconds to to incur an additional time fault. Next into the Coca-Cola Coliseum, Coyle and Legacy threw down the gauntlet, stopping the clock with a clear round in 37.02 seconds. Bluman tried his best to catch Coyle’s time but paid the price with one rail down, leaving him in the runner-up spot.
“For sure it was not a simple course, and later on in the course was where the course designer was trying to test us the most,” explained Coyle, 28, who competed for Ireland at this year’s World Championships in Herning, Denmark. “In the jump-off, Legacy can be very fast but I haven’t done that many where I’ve been really asking her to go as fast as possible. I saw the distance early to the last fence and that gallop is something that I haven’t done much with her, but she went all the way.”
In addition to hoisting the Hickstead Trophy presented to the winner, Coyle was also named the Leading International Rider and Legacy, owned by Canada’s Ariel Grange, was named the Leading Canadian Horse. It was a triumphant finale for Coyle, who was just on the cusp of a top finish all week.
“The Royal is an extremely great show for a lot of reasons,” said Coyle. “It’s Ariel’s hometown, she’s from Toronto, and that’s where the home farm is, so it’s a really special show for that reason. That’s maybe why I was trying too hard to have a good result this week and nothing was happening, but thankfully tonight it was good.”
Bluman has been riding a hot streak with a second-place finish in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Washington at the end of October followed by a win in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Lexington one before The Royal. With a second-place performance in Toronto, he moved into the lead in the North American League standings as riders look to earn points toward qualification for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final taking place in Omaha, NE, next April.
“When you only have three riders for the jump-off course, things are a little complicated and you want to have some sort of strategy,” shared Bluman, 32. “My plan was simple; I had to take risks.
“Gemma is a special horse for me and for the whole team,” he continued of the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare (Luidam x Unaniem) owned by Blue Star Investments. “She’s been very consistent and she’s a great warrior inside of the ring.”
To the delight of the audience, Foster was named the Leading Canadian Rider after her impressive results throughout this year’s Royal Horse Show.
“This show is something that all Canadian riders are so proud of,” expressed Foster, 38, who made her Royal Horse Show debut in 2001 when she won both the Jump Canada Medal and the Running Fox CET Medal national finals. “A huge part of that is the organization and everything that goes into making this such a special event. The most important thing, though, is the crowd and the energy that they give. I can’t help but smile. I love it and I’m so proud that they all come out.”
Charlie Johnstone, CEO of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, echoed Foster’s sentiment saying, “We are very, very excited about what happened here all week celebrating a century of bringing champions to Toronto with our partners from the FEI and Longines. For 100 years, The Royal has really been about bringing the country to the city and being best in class. Clearly what we saw tonight was best in class, and that is what we have stood for for the past century and what we will continue to stand for in the next century.”
The $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Toronto closed out this year’s Royal Horse Show, the marquee event of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, which showcased the very best in horse sport with an elevated CSI5*-W rating from the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Nayel Nassar Speeds to Victory at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario – Egyptian Olympian Nayel Nassar flew to victory in the $74,000 Centennial Cup, on Friday evening, November 11, at the CSI5*-W Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, in Toronto, ON.
Nineteen horse-and-rider combinations contested the speed track set by Canada’s Michel Vaillancourt, racing for the top spot right out of the gate. As they risked for reward, poles fell around the course until Swiss Olympic medalist Beat Mändli was the first to find a clear path in 56.70 seconds aboard Chartraine Pre Noir, a 10-year-old Selle Français mare (Kannan x Corrado II) owned by Grant Road Partners LLC. A few rounds later, it was Nayel Nassar who turned and burned to a blazing fault-free effort in 53.54 seconds with El Conde.
Brazilian Olympic Champion Rodrigo Pessoa with Quality FZ and Canada’s young superstar Sam Walker with Angelika Hero Z also managed to go clear, but they couldn’t keep up with the pace set by Nassar. Last to go, three-time Olympic gold medalist McLain Ward of the United States gave the packed house a thrill by coming close with Lezaro, an 11-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Böckmann’s Lord Pezi x Landadel) owned by Stella Wasserman. The pair stopped the clock in 54.05 seconds to settle for second place while Mändli finished in third.
“Michel [Vaillancourt] was tough on us today, giving us really full rollbacks, not just half-turns,” said Nassar, who is making his debut trip to the Royal Horse Show. “At the same time, we had some very tall and delicate verticals, which you needed to jump clear. It’s always really difficult to keep your rhythm in a ring like this especially when you’re trying to go against the clock. It was all about finding the balance between speed versus precision. Luckily, we managed to get on the right side of that today.”
Nassar has formed a quick and successful partnership with El Conde since getting the ride on the 11-year-old Belgian Sport Horse gelding (Loro Piana Filou de Muze x Final Shot) owned by Evergate Stables LLC earlier this year.
“He’s really my type of horse,” said Nassar of El Conde, who was bred in Belgium by 2010 world champion Phillippe Le Jeune and carries Connemara pony lineage on his dam-side. “We clicked really well from the get-go. He’s small and fast and has a lot of blood. He’s always looking for the next fence. He is just such a fighter in every sense of the word. He’s a great guy.”
Like many of the riders competing at The Royal this week, Nassar is chasing points toward qualification for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final taking place in Omaha, NE, next April. On Saturday night, November 12, riders will be looking to earn valuable qualifying points in the CSI5*-W Royal Horse Show’s highly anticipated $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Toronto, which will take place in front of a packed house of over 7,000 people.
“Competing at The Royal has been unbelievable,” expressed 31-year-old Nassar. “I have no words. These are the events that really motivate you as a rider and force you to dig in a little bit more, and the horses feel the pressure too. This sort of atmosphere brings out the best in horses, especially the good horses. They know when it’s time to rise to the occasion with a big crowd like that, and El Conde definitely knew it and was on tonight.”
For those unable to attend Saturday’s featured event in person, livestream is available on FEI TV here, as well as local television networks worldwide. To relive what is sure to be a thrilling night, tune in to the CBS Sports Network broadcast on November 17, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET.

Nicholas Dello Joio Makes Winning Royal Horse Show Debut
Toronto, Ontario – Nicholas Dello Joio of the United States made his CSI5*-W Royal Horse Show debut one to remember by claiming victory in the $138,000 Big Ben Challenge on Thursday night, November 10, as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
It was a battle from start to finish as U.S. Olympic team silver medalist Kent Farrington and Landon, a nine-year-old Zangersheide gelding (Comilfo Plus Z x Quadrillo), were the first horse-and-rider combination to post a clear round over Canadian course designer Michel Vaillancourt’s challenging track. Colombia’s Roberto Teran Tafur ensured the packed house would be treated to a jump-off by also jumping clear before Canadian Olympians Mario Deslauriers and Amy Millar added their names to the list. Three-time Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ champion Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil and Dello Joio, as last to go, made it a six-horse jump-off.
As the first rider back in the Coca-Cola Coliseum to tackle the jump-off, Farrington put the pressure on those still to come by producing a slick clear performance in 34.15 seconds. None could match his time until the final challengers, Dello Joio and Cornet’s Cambridge, a 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Balou du Reventon x Cambridge 8) owned by The Berry Group LLC, stopped the clock fault-free in 32.53 seconds. Farrington had to settle for second, while Deslauriers produced the fastest four-fault round riding Bardolina 2, a 13-year-old Holsteiner mare (Clarimo x Landos).
“This is probably my favourite show that I’ve done so far, and I’ve only been here for two days!” said Dello Joio. “It’s just next level; it’s a real show. All 24 riders that are here [in the international division] can win on any given night. Everybody has earned their right to be here.
“The last time I came here was when I was a kid and my dad was showing, and my only memory is the cinnamon rolls,” laughed Dello Joio, 33, who is the son of U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Norman Dello Joio. “That was the highlight of my trip here last time, and this win tops it!”
Speaking of his winning mount, Dello Joio said, “It’s hard to put into words but there’s something about him; his personality and just the feeling you get when you’re on him. If you watch him jump, he’s not an extravagant jumper or flashy, but as I say all the time, you can’t beat a smart horse, and he is by far the most intelligent horse that I’ve ever been around.”
Dello Joio will look to cap off his stellar week in the highlight class of the CSI5*-W Royal Horse Show, the highly anticipated $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Toronto, which will take place in front of a packed house of over 7,000 people on Saturday evening, November 12. Riders will be looking to earn valuable qualifying points toward the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final taking place in Omaha, NE, next April.
Earlier on Thursday, U.S. Olympic team gold medalist Laura Kraut won the afternoon’s featured $38,000 Brickenden Trophy riding Calgary Tame, a 10-year-old Selle Français gelding (Old Chap Tame x Kashmir van’t Shuttershof) owned by Stars & Stripes. The pair bested a five-horse jump-off, crossing the timers in 31.85 seconds to score victory. Kristen Vanderveen of the United States riding Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili and Ireland’s Conor Swail aboard Theo 160 tied for second-place honours when both finished the jump-off with a time of 32.68 seconds.
This year’s Royal Horse Show showcases the very best in horse sport with an elevated CSI5*-W rating from the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Kent Farrington Repeats Victory at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario – Kent Farrington of the United States opened international show jumping competition at the Royal Horse Show by scoring victory in the $38,000 Jolera International Strength and Speed Challenge on Wednesday, November 9, as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
Competing over a “power and speed” track designed by Michel Vaillancourt, riders had to navigate eight fences fault-free within the 45-second time allowed before immediately advancing to the speed portion of the course. Of the 12 horse-and-rider combinations to jump clear through the first phase, Farrington and Austria 2 were the fastest in the speed phase, stopping the clock in 30.08 seconds. It marked a repeat victory for pair, who also won in 2019.
“Austria is a hyper-competitive modern show jumper, so almost any course suits her,” said Farrington of the 14-year-old Holsteiner mare (Casall x San Patrignano Corrado) owned by Take the High Road LLC. “She’s won some five-star grand prix classes and jumped at some of the biggest shows in the world, but as she’s gotten older now, I try to pick classes that I think are a little bit easier for her to jump. She’s a great winner and has been since day one, and I think she will be until the end of her career.”
Ireland’s Conor Swail, currently ranked number five in the Longines World Rankings, came the closest to catching Farrington’s time. Swail stopped the clock fractions of a second off the winning pace in 30.41 seconds riding Theo 160, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding (Christian 25 x Calando IV) he owns in partnership with Team Philippaerts. Colombian Olympian Roberto Teran placed third with BP Wakita, a nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare (Pacino x Cruising) owned by Trefoil Farm LLC, finishing in a time of 30.60 seconds.
The highlight of the CSI5*-W Royal Horse Show is the highly anticipated $250,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Toronto which will take place in front of a sold-out audience of over 7,000 people on Saturday evening, November 12. Riders will be looking to earn valuable qualifying points toward the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final taking place in Omaha, NE, next April.
“It’s great to be back at the Royal,” expressed Farrington, who won the Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Toronto in 2017. “I can see they put a lot of effort into the 100th anniversary of the show; the place looks great. The atmosphere and the crowd are always fantastic as well, so it’s a super start to one of my favourite shows of the year.”
Following the opening day of international competition, the stage is set for an incredible week of world-class show jumping, featuring athletes representing 11 countries. The fan-favourite $138,000 Big Ben International Challenge takes place Thursday evening, November 10, while Friday night ups the adrenaline factor with the $75,000 Royal Centennial Cup Speed Challenge.
“There’s usually a strong field of riders here and this year is no exception,” said Farrington, 41, a U.S. Olympic team silver medalist. “We have several riders ranked in the top 30 in the world, which is great for North American show jumping. It helps to raise the level of the sport and gives a great glimpse of top-notch sport to a lot of the people here that might not see it on a regular basis.”

“I thought tonight’s course was hard,” said Campbell-Cooper, 40, who has been competing at The Royal since she was 12 years old. “I loved the gallop to the last jump. That’s one of my favorite things to do. The derby on Sunday was nice and welcoming; it flowed nicely and let the horses get in the ring for a softer first day. Tonight certainly felt like a step up. There were a lot of tests and there were a lot of places you could show your handiness or be a little more conservative depending on the level you and your horse were at.”
Campbell-Cooper has been partnered with Capriati, a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Carembar de Muze x Continue), for the past two years. Together the pair have checked off many “firsts,” including earning the Canadian Hunter Derby Championship title.
“Tonight is my first time being derby champion at The Royal,” said Campbell-Cooper, who has competed in the hunter, jumper, and equitation divisions over the years. “We’ve been here a lot, but it’s such a special atmosphere and such a special venue, so I still get the butterflies every year I come. It’s a special feeling to win.
“The Guthrie family has been such a great sponsor of horse sport for so many years,” continued Campbell-Cooper. “I’m really excited that Muffie Guthrie and Jeff Brandmaier are involved in the derby series. It’s really important for Canada to keep having these classes and showcasing the hunters.”
The overall 2022 Canadian Hunter Derby Reserve Champion was Taylor Brooks, of Ashton, ON, and Spectre, a nine-year-old Zangersheide gelding owned by Taylor Bond. The pair earned fourth place in the $15,000 Braeburn Farms Hunter Derby on Sunday before winning the $25,000 Knightwood Hunter Derby on Tuesday. Brooks and her mount earned a high base score of 87 with eight additional handy points and 10 high option bonus points for an impressive total score of 105.

Shannon Walter and Chantilly Lace Reign Supreme in Junior/Amateur 3’3” Hunter Competition
Toronto, Ontario – Shannon Walter of Campbellville, ON, closed out her 2022 competition season on a high note by winning the Pommies Cider Co. Junior/Amateur 3’3” Hunter championship title on Monday, November 7, at the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
“She’s my heart horse for sure,” said Walter of her winning mount, Chantilly Lace. “I got her when she was three years old, broke her myself, and I’ve been the one bringing her up. She’s amazing. She’s always perfect, and this is her favourite show, so it was great to see her shine here.”
Walter and Chantilly Lace qualified to compete at the Royal Horse Show in the Junior/Amateur 3’3” Hunters, a new division that serves as a stepping-stone between the 3’ Adult Amateur Hunters and the 3’6” Amateur-Owner Hunters.
“I think the jump from 3’ to 3’6” is a big one,” explained Walter, 26, who trains with Wayne McLellan of WGM Stables. “We did the 3’6” Amateur-Owners the last time we competed at The Royal. Then she was off with an injury over the winter, so the 3’3” division seemed like a good medium option that is not too hard on her. I think the addition of this division is great. It gives horses a place that might not have a place in the 3’6”.”
Walter and the 12-year-old Canadian Sport Horse mare sired by Cabardino earned first, second, and fourth place ribbons over fences as well as fifth place in the under saddle class to take home the championship ribbon out of a competitive starting field of 16 horse-and-rider combinations. The 100th anniversary edition of the Royal Horse Show marks the pair’s fourth time showing atthe prestigious year-end event together.
“It means a lot to be champion here,” commented Walter. “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid to watch the show, but Chantilly Lace was the first horse that ever took me to The Royal to compete. It’s just great to get better each year with her and build our relationship.” The reserve championship title in the Pommies Cider Co. Junior/Amateur 3’3” Hunter division went to Julia Watt of Caledon, ON, riding Cirque, owned by High Hill Equestrian.

Kristjan Good is Great in $15,000 Braeburn Farms Hunter Derby
Toronto, Ontario – Kristjan Good of Campbellville, ON, piloted Carano to victory in the $15,000 Braeburn Farms Hunter Derby on Sunday afternoon, November 6, at the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
Good entered the Coca-Cola Coliseum as the defending champion of the class with Chantilly Lace, having won in 2019, the last year The Royal was held due to pandemic restrictions. Partnered with Carano, Good was the 15th rider from a starting field of 20 to take on the course designed by Canada’s Meghan Rawlins. The pair navigated the course with ease while showing off their handiness to earn a total score of 106. Good and his mount were awarded an impressive base score of 90 points with six additional handy points and 10 high option bonus points.
“It was a very nice and smooth course,” explained Good. “The course gave you lots of options. If you wanted to be handier, you could. If you wanted to ride it more like a traditional hunter round, you could.”
Although this was Carano’s first time competing at the Royal Horse Show, the eight-year-old gelding owned by Alexandra Maletta handled the atmosphere and pressure like a seasoned veteran.
“I’ve been riding Carano since he was three years old,” said Good, 34. “He tries his heart out for me every time. It’s neat because he’s coming into his own now and starting to show off his scope. He didn’t quite know what he had when he was a baby, but it’s great to see him come around.”
Carly Campbell-Cooper of Omemee, ON, and Capriati, owned by Alexia Trapp, finished one point behind Good with a score of 105 for second-place honours. Isabelle Lapierre of Levis, QC, rode Carrera S, owned by Johannie Legare, to third place with a score of 102.
Each of the horses in Sunday’s class qualified for The Royal through the Canadian Hunter Derby Series, running throughout the season at horse show venues across the country. Hunter Derby competition returns to the Coca-Cola Coliseum on Tuesday, November 8, with the $25,000 Knightwood Hunter Derby beginning at 7 p.m., where Good and Carano will look to replicate their success. The overall high point horse from both the Braeburn Farms Hunter Derby and the Knightwood Hunter Derby will be presented with the Lorna Jean Guthrie Challenge Trophy.

Ali Ramsay Claims Canadian Show Jumping Championship Title at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario – Ali Ramsay of Victoria, BC, claimed her first Canadian Show Jumping Championship title on Saturday night, November 5, in front of a packed house at the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.
The $125,000 Henry Equestrian Canadian Show Jumping Championship was held over two phases on Friday and Saturday nights. Having competed for $25,000 in prize money during the opening speed round on Friday, riders returned to the Coca-Cola Coliseum in reverse order of standing to tackle the $100,000 two-round finale. Ali Ramsay won Friday’s opening speed round, earning the advantage of being the final competitor to contest Saturday’s course. She demonstrated the same composure that put her into the lead, delivering another clear performance with Bonita vh Keizershof Z.
“I thought the course rode pretty straightforward in the sense that there weren’t really questions on the striding in the lines,” explained Ramsay of the track designed by Canadian Olympic individual silver medalist Michel Vaillancourt. “Watching everyone else maybe just reassured me of my plan.”
Carrying their scores forward, the top six riders from round one advanced to an all-deciding second round. Ramsay was once again the last to return, knowing she could have two rails down and still claim victory. She used up one of those fences before crossing the timers triumphantly to thunderous applause.
“She felt even better tonight, if that’s possible,” said Ramsay of the 11-year-old Zangersheide mare (Bustique x For Pleasure) owned by Ramsay Equestrian Inc. “The whole game of this championship is consistency, and she was really good. She felt amazing.”
Tiffany Foster, of Langley, BC, riding Northern Light, an 11-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare (Plot Blue x Contender) owned by Artisan Farms LLC, was carrying 4.12 faults at the start of the evening. She put the pressure on with a clear round in the first phase, but a dropped a rail in the second phase brought her overall total to 8.12, forcing her to settle for the reserve championship.
Susan Horn, of Bolton, ON, came into Saturday’s competition sitting on one fault behind Ramsay. She had two rails down with Kirlo van den Bosrand, a 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding (Cardento 933 x Utrillo Z) owned by Kingsfield Farm, in Saturday’s first round to bring her total to nine faults. Despite the setback, Horn rallied for a clear in the all-deciding second round to finish in third place.
In the end, it was Ramsay who grabbed the lead and never let go to claim her first Canadian Show Jumping Championship title.
“I was just thinking about how 10 years ago I won the CET Medal Final and that was the last time I actually won a class at The Royal,” reflected Ramsay, 31. “I’ve jumped here probably six times in the last 10 years and had good placings but never won, so 10 years later here we are.”
While Foster, Mario Deslauriers, Amy Millar, and Sam Walker were pre-qualified for the Royal Horse Show’s international division based on their standings in the Longines World Rider Rankings, Ramsay and Horn will now join them with their top placings in the Canadian Show Jumping Championships. They will return to compete among a star-studded line-up when CSI5*-W international show jumping begins on Wednesday, November 9.
Holly Jacks of Hillsburgh, ON, kicked off Saturday night’s competition with a thrilling victory in the $20,000 Horseware® Indoor Eventing Challenge aboard Josephine. Jacks came into the second and deciding round sitting on five penalties in third place after Friday’s first-round effort. After producing the second of only two clears, she shot up the leaderboard where she remained to claim the top prize.
“It’s so fantastic to be back at the Royal,” expressed Jacks, who represented Canada at the 2022 World Championships in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy, in September and rides in memory of Zara Buren, a young rider who died in a tragic accident in 2020. “It’s a community here, and I have a lot of students that showed up to watch me ride in memory of Zara. It was amazing and the crowd was electric. It was a lot of fun.”
Though many combinations ran into trouble across the track designed by renowned British course designer Captain Mark Phillips, Jacks gave an impressive preview of what is to come for her and the nine-year-old Canadian Sport Horse mare owned and bred by Donna Van Beek.
“She is a pretty exciting horse for the future,” shared Jacks. “She’s very classy. She’s always been a spooky horse, but I think her bravery tonight just shows that she’s going to step up to be a fabulous horse for Canada in the future. I’m really excited to have had the opportunity to ride her here tonight.”
Friday night’s winner, Waylon Roberts, originally of Port Perry, ON, and now residing in Cartersville, GA, had an unfortunate miscommunication at one of the skinny brushes, which caused his mount CS Carrera, owned by Sher Schwartz, to run out at the obstacle, incurring a 10-point penalty. That meant the eight-time winner of this class would have to settle for second this time around. Three-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Jung of Germany climbed the standings from fifth to third with a great round on Renegade, who was borrowed from owner Emma Saraullo.

Ali Ramsay Claims Canadian Show Jumping Championship Title at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario – Ali Ramsay of Victoria, BC, opened the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, by winning phase one of the $125,000 Henry Equestrian Canadian Show Jumping Championship on Friday, November 4, in Toronto, ON.
National pride is on the line along with the title of Canadian Show Jumping Champion. Ramsay led the opening phase of competition from start to finish as the first rider on course over the speed track set by Canadian Olympic individual silver medalist Michel Vaillancourt. Laying down a fault-free time to beat of 60.52 seconds riding Bonita vh Keizershof Z, Ramsay simply could not be caught. Susan Horn of Bolton, ON, came the closest with Kirlo van den Bosrand, a 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding (Cardento 933 x Utrillo Z) owned by Kingsfield Farm. She produced the only other clear round in a time of 62.52 seconds. Francois Lamontagne of St. Eustache, QC, and Chanel du Calvaire, his own 14-year-old Belgian Sport Horse mare (Luccianno x Kashmir van Schuttershof), completed the top three with one rail for a three-second penalty in the faults-converted format and a resulting total time of 65.67 seconds.
“She felt amazing,” said Ramsay of the 11-year-old Zangersheide mare by Bustique x For Pleasure that she has been partnered with for five years. “She’s usually amazing but I didn’t know what to expect because she’s never been indoors before and it’s quite the atmosphere here. She stepped in, she took it all in, and then she was ready to go.”
Having competed for $25,000 in prize money during the opening round, riders will return to the CocaCola Coliseum in reverse order of standing to tackle the $100,000 Henry Equestrian Canadian Show Jumping Championship – Round 2 on Saturday evening, November 5. Ramsay will switch from being first on the start list to the advantageous position of going last in her bid for her first Canadian Championship title.
“You have to stay consistent in this championship to make the first-round result mean anything,” said Ramsay of Friday night’s competition. “It feels great to be back at the Royal. Everybody is excited to be here.”
Though pleased with the day’s result, Ramsay has her sights set firmly on the Royal Horse Show’s international division, hoping to be one of two Canadians to qualify with a top performance in the Canadian Show Jumping Championships. Mario Deslauriers, Tiffany Foster, Amy Millar, and Sam Walker have already secured their starting places based on their world rankings.
Opening night of the centennial celebration of the Royal Horse Show kicked off with the Horseware® Indoor Eventing Challenge, bringing the exhilaration of jumping natural cross-country obstacles to an indoor setting with a mix of cross-country and traditional show jumping fences. Waylon Roberts, originally of Port Perry, ON, and now residing in Cartersville, GA, rode to the top of the class with aclear effort in a quick time of 81.16 seconds aboard CS Carrera, owned by Sher Schwartz. Closely behind Roberts was 2019 reserve champion Kendal Lehari of Uxbridge, ON, who crossed the timers in 81.65 seconds riding her own Audacious. Holly Jacks of Hillsburgh, ON, and Josephine, owned by Donna Van Beek, had the fastest time of the night in 77.84 seconds, but five faults put them into third place. The Horseware® Indoor Eventing Challenge continues Saturday, November 5, with the second and deciding round of competition, where results from both nights are combined to determine the overall standings.
