RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  1. All sheep must have National I.D Tags (CSIP) in place when arriving on site. All sheep must be checked for identification on Wednesday November 8, 2023, Sheep that cannot be positively identified when checked by the committee will be barred from showing. All animals must be identified by an approved tag and/or legible tattoo.
  2. This show (sections 500-508) is recognized as a purebred show (unless specific classes state otherwise) and as such, registration will be governed by Livestock Rules and Regulations Rule # 4.
  3. All incomplete entries will be treated as late entries and subject to a late entry fee of $20 in addition to the regular entry fee. Exceptions will only be made for entries made with information pending. Please ensure ALL information is correctly filled in.
  4. An exhibitor is allowed to make 10 entries per breed in single classes consisting of up to:
    1. 3 Yearling Rams
    2. 4 Ram Lambs
    3. 3 Yearling Ewes
    4. 4 Ewe Lambs
    5. NOTE: In group classes only one entry will be allowed per exhibitor. An individual animal may only be shown in one single class.
  5. Date of birth and flock letters are to be on the entry forms and will be printed in the catalogue.
  6. Pens will be allocated by the Sheep Superintendent and Committee as available.
  7. If fewer than 15 animals or 3 flocks or 3 gets are shown for any breed, then that breed will automatically be shown in the Any Other Breed section. If a breed from within the AOB class has entries of more than 15 animals and 3 flocks or 3 gets, that breed will be separated into its own breed show on a yearly basis.
  8. If there is a class with more than 15 animals present at the time of the show, the class may be divided, according to the executive committee decisions. The executive committee will be comprised of the Chair, Vice Chair and 3 members of the culling committee.
  9. Substitutions will be allowed, as follows:
    1. 3 substitutions within breed and class per exhibitor
    2. Substitutions must be made with the Sheep Entry Clerk on or before the time that registration papers are checked at the show
    3. In the case of an animal purchased, then that animal may only be substituted for a purchased animal entry
  10. The following breeds must be shown in short fleece (staple not more than 1.5 inches or 3.8 cm): Dorset, N.C. Cheviot, Hampshire, Oxford, Southdown, Suffolk, and Texel. Exception: Special Slick Shorn Class entries (see specific rules). All Southdown sheep shown in Ontario run competitions will be shorn within approximately one month prior to competition and have a consistent length of wool over the entire body, with leg and head detailing left to the show person’s discretion.
  11. All sheep must be washed prior to arriving at the RAWF, and all sheep must be in proper condition.
  12. All sheep must be washed and all breeds must be cleanly presented and of acceptable condition, subject to inspection by representatives of the sheep committee. Failure to pass inspection will result in the immediate expulsion from the RAWF Sheep Barn.
  13. Registration papers must be available for checking by a representative of the RAWF Sheep Committee. The teeth and length of wool will be examined by an official commencing the afternoon of Wednesday, November 8, 2023. All exhibitors or a representative must be present to personally present animals for mouths checked and length of wool as well as original registration papers.
  14. The Royal will be following the CSBA tail length requirements. All sheep entered will require a caudal fold that can be seen or felt
  15. Reject animals will be marked and/or removed.
  16. Filling an animals rumen unnaturally, such as tubing and/or drenching is prohibited.
  17. All sheep—including those exhibiting in the Breeding Sheep Show, Junior Sheep Show, Royal Sheep and Wool Ambassador Competition, and Market Lamb Show— will be reviewed by the Culling Committee. At the discretion of the Culling Committee and the RAWF, an official veterinarian appointed by the RAWF will conduct inspections for the presence of contagious and/or infectious diseases, as well as adherence to the Canadian Sheep Breeders Association (CSBA) tail length requirements. All sheep entered will require a caudal fold that can be seen or felt. A veterinarian will be directly assisting the committee during the culling. Any sheep deemed unfit for health reasons by the official veterinarian will be asked to leave the facilities immediately, however, Animals deemed not in compliance with CSBA tail length requirements will be disqualified from competition but not required to leave the facilities.
  18. All exhibitors must be dressed in white shirts and black trousers while showing in the ring. All clothing shall not bear any letters, marks or labels purporting to reveal the identity of the exhibitors. No hats or caps are to be worn in the show ring. No entrance to the ring will be the result for failing to comply with this rule.
  19. Exhibitors may show sheep on halters. ** Two persons per animal allowed in ring in all single lamb and single yearling lamb classes (excluding slick shorn classes #2 and #9). In group classes only one extra person per group allowed in the ring.
  20. No smoking will be allowed in the Sheep Barn.
  21. Blankets must be removed from all sheep following judging except class winners and/or animals going directly to another exhibition.
  22. All water from pens should be dumped in the designated place – not in the pens. Pens are to be left in dry conditions at time of release.
  23. In the case of an animal entered in a class that no longer qualifies, the animal will not be eliminated or disqualified but will be reclassified and may be moved to the next age group. No exhibitor may exceed the number of animals allowed as per Rule #4.
    • 2 persons per animal allowed in ring in all single lamb and single yearling lamb classes (excluding slick shorn classes #2 and #9).
  24. Slick Shorn Special Classes
    1. Animals shown in these classes are eligible for group classes
    2. Entries must be completely slick shorn of wool two weeks prior to show day. Head and legs may be left on at the discretion of the exhibitor.
    3. This class is not available to longwool breeds
    4. Entry must have only one show person per animal
    5. 1st and 2nd place winners of each breed class will qualify for trophy classes

    Group Classes


    Progeny of Dam: Two (2) animals dammed by the same ewe to be shown together exemplifying the consistency and qualities transmitted from their dam. Pairs of animals exhibited may be of mixed sexes and mixed ages ex: ram lamb and yearling ewe dammed by the same ewe may be shown together. Animals will be judged as a pair on their conformation, uniformity, and physical qualities. Animals do not need to share the same sire. Entries maybe subject to parentage DNA testing.

    Get of Sire: A group of three animals, full mouth milk teeth, by the same sire. Both sexes may be represented. Animals need not have been shown in previous classes, but at least one animal must be owned by the exhibitor.

    Breeder’s Flock: Bred and owned by the exhibitor. Group of 4 animals, both sexes represented. Each animal in the group must have been exhibited in one of the preceding classes. All animals in a group must be of one breed.

    Presented to the Grand Champion Ram of the Show by the family of the late Mr. W. Redelmeier, Don Head Farms, Richmond Hill, ON, to perpetuate his memory. A Grand Champion rosette will be presented to the winner.

    The Eph Snell Memorial Trophy (Perpetual)

    Presented to the Best Get of Sire of Long Wool Breeds in memory of Eph's dedication and interest in all breeds of sheep (particularly Long Wool breeds). Given by Snell Enterprises, Blyth, ON, in memory of Eph and Jim.

    Winner from each breed section to compete. Prize money awarded to the Champion ($200) and Reserve Champion ($100) Progeny of Dam.

    Presented to the best Breeder's Flock of long-wooled sheep by the family of the late Arnold J. Gardhouse to perpetuate his memory. A lifetime exhibitor of Lincoln Sheep. The winner will recieve a suitable memento.

    The Cecil Stobbs Memorial Trophy (Perpetual)

    Presented to the first prize flock (any breed) by Mrs. Cecil Stobbs in memory of her late husband Cecil Stobbs, who during his lifetime made a notable contribution to the sheep industry.

    Premier Breeder Banner

    Presented to the Breeder of six sheep of one breed which wins the most points in a section in which five or more exhibitors compete. In the event of a tie on points, then the placing in the breeder's flock will be used. If a tie still remains then the breed having the highest number of animals shown will be the deciding factor.

    Presented to the exhibitor winning the most points in a breed section as a result of showig six sheep owned by the exhibitor in a section in which five or more exhibitors compete.


    Levine Achievement Award

    This award is donated by Dr. Norman Levine and Family in memory of Peter Levine. This award is designed to honor the memory of Peter Levine, well known to many RAWF sheep exhibitors and a true friend. The trophy will be presented annually to the person who exemplifies the all-around ability, sportsmanship, and dedication necessary to be respected by his or her fellow exhibitors and breeders Selection of the recipient of this award will be made by a special committee and presented at the conclusion of the trophy classes. The following criteria will be used as a guide in the selection:

    • Active showperson, breeder, or manager
    • Dedicated supporter of breed activities
    • May represent any sheep breed
    • Has the ability to breed, manage, develop, and exhibit any breed of sheep
    • Exhibits at some major shows anywhere in Canada

    SHEPHERDS' AWARD


    Sponsored by the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Ltd.

    RULES AND REGULATIONS

    1. This award will be based on the best display, not including the quality of sheep exhibited.
    2. At least 50% of the points will be allotted for general neatness of the exhibit and for grooming of the animals.
    3. The remaining points will be allotted for courtesy displayed by the attendants in providing information to the
      public.
    4. Every exhibitor of 5 or more head of sheep will be deemed to be a competitor in this class.
    5. ** Please Note cleanliness of the barn by all exhibitors for the duration of the sheep show is expected.**
