Competition Information

Time of Arrival: Thursday October 31, 2024, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Weight-Off Start: Thursday October 31, 2024, 1:00 PM

All pigs entered in the competition will be processed at Conestoga Meat Packers. All auction bids are considered donations to the participants, and no meat will be provided to bidders in the transaction.

    RULES AND REGULATIONS:

    A. CONTESTANTS

    1. All youth residing in Ontario who are between the ages of 9 and 21 years of age, as of January 1, 2024, shall be eligible to participate in the 2024 Ontario Junior Swine Show. Hereafter, the above youth shall be referred to as contestants.
    2. A maximum of two market pigs may be exhibited in Class 5 or 6 at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Contestants are to feed and care for their own market pigs.

    B. ENTRY FEE AND DEADLINE

    1. There will be a $30.00 per contestant entry fee. Entry fee is payable upon entry and the e-transfer should be sent to royalojss@gmail.com
    2. All entries must be submitted online at https://tinyurl.com/royalojss
    3. Entries must be received by September 15, 2024

    C. WEIGHING MARKET FEEDER PIGS OFF AT THE ROYAL

    1. All market pigs will be weighed and probed ultrasonically at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair beginning at 1:00 PM on Thursday October 31, 2024. All market pigs must be on site by 1:00 PM. NOTE: THERE MUST BE A PERSON RESPONSIBLE TO RECEIVE THE CONTESTANTS PIGS AT THE RAWF AND BE ABLE TO BRING PIGS FOR WEIGHING. Market pigs may arrive on site at the Royal after 10:00 AM on Thursday October 31, 2024. Reservations must be made prior to the RAWF with the Swine Superintendent. Someone must be available to bring pigs to the weigh-off beginning at 1:00 PM.
    2. In order to qualify for the show and sale, a market pig must:
      a. weigh between 115 – 130 kilograms upon weigh-off (NO EXCEPTIONS AT WEIGH-OFF)
      b. have a backfat thickness of 25 mm or less adjusted to 100 kilograms
      c. be physically sound and able to walk at time of weigh-off
    3. All barrow pigs will be in Class 5.
    4. All gilt pigs will be in Class 6
    5. Purebred Landrace market feeder pigs must identified at time of the weigh-off to be qualify for the John Knudsen Memorial Trophy.
    6. HEALTH: If in the opinion of the Committee, the health condition of a market pig is not desirable for the good of the show, the market pig will be disqualified. In addition to this, the pig cannot have visible abnormalities and must be able to walk into the ring.
    7. Use of any Paylean product will be strictly prohibited.
    8. BANNED SUBSTANCE TESTING: The use of all banned growth promoters substances in Canada are highly illegal and will not be tolerated. The OJSS Committee will be performing random tests on animals at time of weigh-off. Any samples testing positive for banned growth promoters will be identified and those animals will be immediately eliminated from the show. All costs of the positive tests will be borne by the participant. Also, the exhibitor will be barred from exhibiting any animals for a period of two years and will forfeit all prizes and prize money and in addition the exhibitor will lose their placing.

    D. SPECIAL NOTES REGARDING CLASSES

    1. Landrace market pigs must exhibit only the characteristics of the Landrace breed. This is only to qualify for the John Knudsen Memorial Trophy.
    2. For showmanship classes, each contestant must use one of the market pigs they are exhibiting in Class 5 or 6.
    3. All ages are as of January 1, 2024.
    4. Competitor must be present to enter market pigs in any class.
    5. As with all Youth Events at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, 100% participation is expected.
    6. Any exhibitor(s) found to be under the influence of alcohol will be disqualified from the show.

    E. SALE OF MARKET FEEDER PIGS

    1. Market pigs that have placed in the top half of the show (up to 15 animals) will be sold at 4:30 PM, Friday November 1, 2024, in the Swine Ring, Lower East Annex.
    2. Each contestant is allowed a maximum of one market pig in the sale. Buyers will pay for market pigs on a live weight basis.
    3. A commission shall be charged on the top 15 market pigs sold at the auction. All other rules governing auction sales at the RAWF will apply. Refer to Auction Sales and Market Livestock Information at the front of the competition book.

    F. PRIZE MONEY

    (Depending on sponsorship money being made available)

    1. Individual Market pigs: The following schedule of prize money for the show will be paid on the basis of total points accumulated. The market pigs are scored on the basis of 60% for estimated lean yield (to three decimal points) and 40% for visual conformation. Maximum of two cash awards per contestant.

    5. If any market pig upon slaughter is found to be a ridgling or hermaphrodite, all prize money and trophies shall be forfeited and the contestant shall receive payment on the basis of a ridgling carcass.

    Group Of Three

    Each team must have three (3) contestants each showing one (1) of thier own pigs. No exceptions.
